Why You Need to Stop Counting Calories

Want to know what my family used to call me as a nickname when I was like 15?

Ms. Calorie….

I am not even kidding.

It was because I would never eat anything that classified as “junk” food.

I said no to all desserts, a lot of outings, and if i did go I would choose the safest thing on the menu… salad.

Calories used to control me and ruin my life.

And no I’m not being dramatic.

I used to be a prisoner to counting calories and OBSESSING over eating too much and gaining weight.

Eating special k, under 100 calorie bars, making sure I never consumed anything calorically dense (fries, ice cream, pizza).

You know, the good stuff.

I felt that guilt, that anxiety, over the food I ate all the time.

But realistically, I was doing so much more harm than good.

I was putting crap in my body because I was worried there was too many calories in a banana.

My fitness pal was my best friend and I tracked all of my food making sure I was staying under 1,200 calories.

If you follow me on insta you seen me post on how 1200 calories is a nutritional requirement of a 2 year old. Not a grown women.

Anyways, getting to the point. I was obsessed with counting my calories and had no real concept of what good quality nutrition was…. clearly.

After studying nutrition and fitness more in depth and understanding what it really meant, how it’s used in our bodies and how IMPORTANT eating enough vitamins, minerals, fibre, fat, protein, carbs really was… my mindset started to shift.

Plus I simply had enough. I was tired of obsessing, tracking, counting, not enjoying foods that other people were enjoying.

I felt like I was missing out.

So I let go of tracking completely and just focused more on eating foods that were good for me, that filled me up, made me feel good, healthy and gave me energy.

It took me a while to find a good balance because after a long time of restriction, I’d binge on foods I told myself “no” before. Which is okay, and normal. Our bodies don’t know the difference between restriction and starvation.

Eventually I did find balance, and now I am at such a great place.

Lets take a look at what my eating habits are now:

  • I don’t weight myself
  • Don’t count calories, track macros or anything of the sort.
  • I don’t obsess when I go out to eat, Last night I met my parents for dinner at a really yummy place, had fish and chips. Then ordered a cheesecake for dessert to-go and ate it in bed with my boyfriend later. (LIVING MY LIFE)
  • I am the healthiest and happiest I have ever been
  • I am in great physical shape and loving my body
  • I eat foods that I crave, I move my body in ways that I love and I FEEL DAMN GOOD

Food freedom is a damn good feeling and intuitively eating will not make you gain weight. You will become full of life and realize how much of it you’ve been missing out on.

I want to share some knowledge on the whole calorie, food sitch.

Because you all deserve a happy, healthy, balanced, fulfilling life free of calorie counting.

Why You Need To Stop Counting Calories

One. Calories tell you absolutely NOTHING about the nutritional quality.

Quality>Quantity always.

No one told me special k had little to 0 fibre, protein, and contained added sugar, preservatives, ingredient lists the size of my forearm.

I just figured… low calorie = weight loss = happy raquel.

But I was putting nothing good in my body. So theres nothing special about special k.

That goes for every product labelled “low calorie” “low fat” “low carb” its just a marketing strategy and means processed, fake food.

Two. Restriction of healthy foods.

This leads me into my next reason…

Avocados, or nuts, are very high in fat and calorie dense, but also very nutrient dense and provides fibre, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and on and on.

Bananas and fruit in general get such a bad rep because there high in sugar. But there also high in anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, fibre, phytonutrients, vitamin c, potassium, vitamin A, etc.,

Who eats fruit and feels like a bag of shit like you would if you downed a slurpee? UHM NO ONE.

Fruit makes you feel good and glowy because its full of benefits that your body NEEDS and THRIVES off of.

SO please don’t avoid fruit or any other whole, unprocessed food because it has sugar, or high calories.

Your missing out on good, quality nutrition and your body/mind will suffer the consequences

Three. Calories are energy.

Chances are the more you restrict to a certain number of calories, you won’t feel energetic.

I have a lot of people tell me that when they were counting calories, restricting food and got to their “goal” weight, they felt tired, fatigued, and struggled to get through their day.

Which makes sense because your body is starving, and if you are restricting this much to get to a certain weight and feel exhausted. Your body is not meant to be at that weight.

Four. It’s not sustainable

PLUS its downright exhausting. Can you imagine how much energy and time you’d have to do other fun things when your not obsessing over your calorie intake?

Anyways, your body will not sustain a weight if your obsessing, restricting, counting calories and macros to be there.

I don’t know who would want to live a life that way anyways but thats just me.

Do you wonder why your weight goes up and down or other people’s weight goes up and down like a yo-yo?

Because the low calorie diet they are on didn’t work, they craved the foods that they restricted, binge ate them, gained the weight back and repeat.

Let’s put an end to this.

Ladies, use your PRIMAL instincts and eat intuitively.

Eat foods that are whole, real, raw, make you feel good, fill you up and make you GLOW.

Stop worrying about calories because the nutrition content is 100x more important.

I promise you you will feel so much better, happier, lighter and free.

Eat mass amounts of fruits, vegetables, good sources of carbs (potatoes, rice, oats, quiona,) nuts, seeds and if you want ice cream then have some and enjoy it.

It is a more sustainable way of life.

I can honestly say that I am in the best shape of my life, I feel the best, and I eat over 2,000 calories a day FOR SURE.

Sometimes just my mornings contain 1,000 calories. Im a hungry gal what can I say?

I don’t have a 6 pack, I’m not shredded because I refuse to restrict my body to look that way.

Everyone is different. Find your healthy, find your balance.

I hope you found some take-aways from this message and get rid of the dieting.
